The basics of it are that there are three Sectors, each dictated by a sleep schedule. The Daylights sleep from 5am-12pm, the Midnights 5pm-12am, and the Darklights 11am-6pm. There were originally only the Daylights and Midnights until it was discovered (supposedly) that not everyone could adhere to only one or the other. The Darklight Sector was created after that.
There are four cities, each with their own Leaders for each Sector, totaling to nine Sector Leaders. These nine answered to the Council, six people who lead all of the city Sectors.
Anyways, the original story plotline would have progressed from showing these small flashback type scenes, giving reason why the main character, Alazarin, is so mistrusting of adults, to modern day. There, Alaz is one of the nine Sector leaders, heading the Darklight Sector of her city. The reason for why she's been selected as leader is unclear in the beginning, but clears out as the story goes on. Her Uncle, who happens to lead the Midnight Sector, is shown to be quite hateful towards her and her Sector for unknown reasons. Since he leads one of the Sectors in the city, the people in his Sector follow his opinions and begin to act the same way he does towards Alaz. Hateful, rude, inconsiderate... they basically treat the Darklights like an unwanted step child in the city.
This leads to small arguments, which grow to problems the Authority (police) have to interfere in, and eventually builds up to a civil war between all the Sectors of every city. Alaz's Uncle, Luka, declares that the Darklight Sector should be done away with and since he, at this point, has extreme hatred just for the Darklights living, wants them all killed. It turns into an all out genocide attempt on the Midnights part to kill all Darklights. The Daylights, meanwhile, are the peaceful group and are trying to prevent any of this from happening. On the side, a few Darklights are discovering that they have powers. It's suspected that an 'alteration' surgery, something no one understands, that certain members of the Darklight Sector went through after being placed into the Darklight Sector caused them, but no one is certain. They're limited in the use of them since it seems a debilitating headache strikes when they've overused said power. This seems to be, from Alaz's point of view, a reason why her Uncle hates them so much. The reasons behind the creation of her Sector and the powers, as well as the ultimate reason her Uncle is attempting genocide against her Sector, end up being revealed at last, but not soon enough.
